Breaking Pain's Grip

PHYSICAL pain often represents what appears to be a desperate situation. Its grip can seem so strong that it's impossible to think of anything else.Such pain requires something powerful to silence it. The Bible tells us of a power that's stronger than even the most severe pain. In Hebrews we read, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword. God's healing word is a spiritual remedy for pain that is always available. It comes even when we feel we are in no position to think clearly. It acts because it is God's universal law. Still, the more we understand this "word of God for ourselves, the more certain will be its effect in our experience. No one deserves sudden, debilitating pain, or pain of any kind, for that matter. Pain is simply not included in God's love for the man He creates. And it's not included in God's government of man. God's love is the fiber of God's word and the notion of pain is totally foreign to God, who is Love. Since God is all-powerful, His love governs all. Christ Jesus, of course, knew this so well that he could heal instantly. The Bible records the account of the time Peter's mother-in-law was "sick of a fever. Jesus knew the depth of God's love for that woman. "And, Matthew's Gospel tells us, "he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. God's love is powerful enough to overcome pain. For such a truth to be no longer true or for it to need assistance in order to apply, would be for God to be less than what He once was. But God is divine Spirit, and His power is, and never was less than, all. Mary Baker Eddy, who founded Christian Science, made her discovery of God's all-power when she was healed of a life-threatening injury. She says, "It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good. "The miracle of grace is no miracle to Love. This divine Love that is God creates and cares for man. In the truest sense, man is the object of God's love. Since this love is of divine Spirit, God's man (which includes all of us in our real selfhood) is actually in His image, spiritual and perfect. Illness and injury, along with any pain that might be associated with them, are not truly part of our life, because they are not part of God and His image. No matter what its apparent cause, pain is a deceitful imposition on us and can and should be rejec ted. Sometimes this can seem hard to do, but accepting God's love for us is always a good first step toward a full healing. Many times I have been able to prove this fact in my own experience. When prayer has been employed to meet the onset of pain, the pain has disappeared--and often quickly. Once a friend was gripped with severe menstrual pain and cramping. Because this disabling pain recurred each month, she asked me to help her through prayer. Right away I turned to God's love and felt uplifted. I felt God's presence and love. I saw that God's presence makes pain impossible, for God, divine Love, fills all space. I also knew that God's love for His child means there is no legitimacy for any pain, regardless of what conventional thought says about being a woman or a man. These spiritual tru ths helped free both my friend and me from fear. The pain ceased in just a few minutes and has not returned. One thing stands out clearly to me from experiences like this one: God rules by love and divine justice. Pain--even when we might think we brought it on ourselves--is not part of Love's divine justice. And we can heal it on this basis.
