WORTH NOTING ON TV

PEARL HARBOR ANNIVERSARY: Please check local listings for the blitz of programs - local, network, and cable - marking the 50th anniversary of the Dec. 7 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The shows range over several days - from a Monitor Channel report and panel discussion to multi-part network specials recounting the event and its context. You can witness President Bush dropping a wreath into Pearl Harbor from the memorial that stands over the sunken battleship USS Arizona. You can also hear survivor accounts and analysis. SUNDAY Mel Gibson Goes Back to School (HBO, 7-10:30 p.m.): Here's one way to revitalize US education: Have Mel Gibson drop into a high school English class and shoot the breeze with students about "Hamlet." That's exactly what happens in this special, which precedes the TV debut of Franco Zeffirelli's critically well-received 1990 film version of the play. Gibson, who plays the title role, helps the class discard notions that Shakespeare is dull by showing clips to illustrate the tragedy's themes of murder, sel f-searching, and vengeance. After "Hamlet," Gibson takes viewers behind the scenes of the production.

MONDAY 1991 Billboard Music Awards (Fox, 8-10 p.m., E.T.): Billboard - the pop-music industry magazine - has some claim for calling the award-winners on this special "hot," because they're picked by actual tallies of stage, radio, and recording sales. But the prizes are mainly a good excuse for a congratulatory blowout that features performances by a roster of rock stars like John Mellencamp, Genesis, and a long list of others.

Please check local listings, especially on PBS.
