'Hook' Wins Holiday Box-Office Sweeps

THE fantasy-adventure film "Hook" dominated moviegoing on the weekend after Christmas, with a solid $16 million take at 2,224 screens, according to industry estimates.

"Hook" highlighted one of the strongest weekends ever for the box office, with three other films Father of the Bride,Beauty and the Beast," and "Prince of Tides all were expected to cross the $10 million mark. The biggest Friday-through-Sunday weekend on record was posted on June 23-25, 1989, following the opening of "Batman."

"Hook" has easily topped the box office for the past three weekends and produced a 19-day gross of about $58 million. TriStar Pictures needed "Hook" to perform well because of an estimated price tag of more than $60 million, and generous remuneration for stars Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Julia Roberts.

Disney's pair of family-oriented films, "Father of the Bride" and its animated "Beauty and the Beast," finished second and third with about $11 million at 1,561 screens and $10.5 million at 1,925 screens, respectively.

Columbia's debut weekend of "The Prince of Tides" was fourth with an estimated $10 million at 1,405 screens. The drama, starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte, opened on Christmas Day and has brought in a total of $15.4 million.

Warner Bros.'s "The Last Boy Scout," starring Bruce Willis as a burned-out Secret Service agent, finished fifth with an estimated take of $7.5 million at 1,823 screens.

Oliver Stone's "JFK" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" battled over sixth place, with about $7 million each.

Paramount's latest installment of the Star Trek saga, the last movie to lead the box office prior to "Hook," has taken in more than $50 million in 24 days. Paramount's other major release, the "Addams Family," took in about $6 million to bring its six-week gross to about $90 million.
