CARL LEWIS IN NEW ORLEANS

The 10-day United States Olympic Track and Field Trials, which determine who will go to the Summer Olympic Games next month, continue this weekend in New Orleans.

Although some of coach Tom Tellez's athletes are making strong showings, Carl Lewis's performance has been disappointing. Lewis ran his worst race in 11 years last Saturday when he placed sixth in the 100-meter final, failing to make the Olympic team.

Leroy Burrell and Mark Witherspoon, who also train with Tellez, will join Dennis Mitchell in the 100-meter dash in Barcelona, Spain.

Despite a sluggish performance in the preliminaries, Lewis gained the No. 2 Olympic spot in the long jump Wednesday.

"To make the team is a relief," he told the Associated Press. "... I still have the 200 to go."

Lewis competes in the first round of the 200 meters today. The final will be held Sunday.
