GRAND JURY SAID TO INDICT L.A. POLICEMEN

At least three police officers have been indicted on federal charges of violating Rodney King's civil rights in the videotaped beating of the motorist last year, the Los Angeles Times reported yesterday.

The newspaper, citing unidentified sources, said that a grand jury returned the indictments Tuesday but that they were ordered sealed until yesterday.

The sources would not say which three officers were indicted, but at least three members of the Los Angeles police force - Sgt. Stacey Koon and Officers Laurence Powell and Timothy Wind - had received letters from the United States attorney's office identifying them as targets of the investigation, the paper said.

Messrs. Koon, Powell, Wind, and Officer Theodore J. Briseno were acquitted in state court last spring on assault and bruality charges in the beating. The acquittals led to the Los Angeles riots.

Mr. Briseno broke ranks with his colleagues during the trial, saying he tried to stop the beating.
