An Absolute Monarch

TODAY most of the world considers an absolute monarchy to be an undesirable form of government because it is prone to abuse and often oppressive. At the same time, we find ourselves longing for a supreme ruler who is wholly good and who will govern with total compassion. But we're sure our hope is too idealistic and could never be fulfilled.

Or could it? There is an authority--the Bible--that says we do have a Supreme Ruler now. This Ruler is God, the only creator. In reality man and the universe are always under His harmonious rule. The Bible tells us, in I Chronicles, ``Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all."

It sometimes seems difficult to grasp what the realm of God, Spirit, is really like because the material senses can't accurately perceive spiritual reality. But through prayer it is possible to gain a higher, a more spiritual, understanding of man and the universe. We do this as we claim our true sonship as man created by God, divine Love, in His image and likeness.

Man is right now the child of God, pure and perfect. And man and the universe are eternally under the control of God's righteous government. Even small glimpses of man's present Godlike nature help us to see that the kingdom of Love is surrounding us, and the realization of this truth brings increased harmony to our lives.

In the world today, much oppression, of countries and individuals, has been overturned, but there is still a great deal of work to do before the entire world becomes peaceful and free. We don't, however, need to put off accepting God's present control of His creation. Look at the examples in the Bible where spiritually-minded people experienced the immediate benefit of God's power. Our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, destroyed the belief that evil could overcome and destroy good. He showed by his resurrection that God is supreme.

The Biblical proofs that God is governing point us to the reality of God's kingdom, where good reigns supreme. And every time any type of oppression is destroyed, we are strengthened in our trust of the omnipotent law of justice.

What is it, then, that denies the supremacy of God, good, in the world? Anything that tries to convince us that what we are facing is beyond God's control is a false belief in a power opposed to God. Whether evil takes form as a domineering boss, a demeaning spouse, or a willful faction in government, we need not submit to it; evil has no place in God's kingdom. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, assures us in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: ``Evil is not pow er. It is a mockery of strength, which erelong betrays its weakness and falls, never to rise." As we learn to rely firmly on God's supreme and just rule and know that He alone governs our lives, unjust domination will diminish in our experience.

It is our duty persistently to acknowledge God's goodness and to refuse to submit to evil. This is not always easy in today's world, but as we confidently claim God's supremacy--His absolute monarchy--we will be helping all mankind to realize the peace and freedom that are rightfully ours in God's kingdom.

Proving that man is good and perfect is possible when we understand and accept our heritage as children of God. As the spiritual creation of one loving Father, we can all share His love in striving for a peaceful, harmonious universe. The whole earth can enjoy the fullness of ``the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty" of the one God, who governs His universal family with everlasting peace and love.
