THOMAS HAMPSON IN HIS DEBUT RECITAL AT CARNEGIE HALL

American baritone Thomas Hampson opens the 1992-93 "Great Singers in Recital" series at Carnegie Hall this Sunday. His program includes Schumann's 20 Lieder Songs; Vaughn Williams's "Joy, Shipmate, Joy!" and "A Clear Midnight"; Neidlinger's "Memories of Lincoln"; Rorem's "Look Down Fair Moon"; and Bernstein's "To What You Said." Pianist Craig Rutenberg provides accompaniment.
Last season, Mr. Hampson opened the Metropolitan Opera as a guest performer in the Silver Anniversary Gala of "Die Fledermaus" and the New York Philharmonic season, singing Copland's "Old American Songs," under the baton of Kurt Masur. This past summer he made his Italian opera debut at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino as the Count in Mozart's "Nozze di Figaro" with Zubin Mehta.
Other performers in the Carnegie Hall recital series are: mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade (Jan. 14), mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig (March 20), and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky (April 26).
