WORTH NOTING ON TV

FRIDAY

Great Performances (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): The late trumpeter and bandleader Miles Davis - a fountain of creative innovation - is the subject of this biographical montage. Its evocative footage includes sections of the 1991 Montreux Jazz festival, in which Davis collaborated with arranger Gil Evans. SUNDAY

NBA All-Star game (NBC, 6-9 p.m., ET): Pro basketball's Eastern and Western conferences meet in the 43rd version of this contest, carried live from Salt Lake City's Delta Center. As usual, fans voted for the team lineups, and this year one of the players for the East is Orlando Magic center Shaquille O'Neal, the first rookie voted a starting position since 1985. This year, some of the analysis will be provided by a man who's been there - Magic Johnson - along with Mike Fratello. (The network will begin its coverage with `NBA Showtime,' a pre-game show with host Bob Costas.)

Wayne and Garth's Saturday Night Live Music a Go-Go (NBC, 9-11 p.m.): If you can find it in your heart to forgive the title, the music itself on this special, one has to confess, is impressive. Consider a few of the many names included in clips culled from 18 years of `SNL': Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, R.E.M., Paul Simon, Roy Orbison, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Madonna, Miles Davis, Whitney Houston, Nirvana, the B-52s, Chuck Berry, The Grateful Dead, Aretha Frankin, Garth Brooks, and the

Pretenders. Hosts Wayne and Garth are played by SNL regulars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.
