WORTH NOTING ON TV

A Day at the White House (NBC, 8-9 p.m.): It's been done before but never ceases to fascinate: A camera crew dogs the president as he goes through the daily business of the world's most visible job. Previous presidents whom NBC has spent the day with are Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and Bush. For President Clinton's turn, the network says it picked a "random" date: Thursday, May 6, the day before the airing of this hour-long broadcast capsulizing the results. The minute-by-minute details typically viewed in th ese programs - the comments, the paper handling, the consultations - all give a sense of substance and reality to the office of president, as viewers observe him from early morning until late evening. This program will also spotlight some of the people Mr. Clinton has appointed to top posts, and anchor Tom Brokaw interviews Clinton about how it feels to be president.

Great Performances (PBS, 9-10:30 p.m.): If you've ever seen him dance you probably still recall the effect the late Rudolf Nureyev had - a giant strength combined with a kind of unearthly magic. It was hard to connect his physical performance - brilliant as it was - with the transcendent feelings they stirred. In this edition of the arts series, Nureyev tells his life story in an interview taped in late 1990. Some of the story is also told through talks with Nureyev's renowned partner Margot Fonteyn and with people like Anna Undeltsova, a former member of Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. At the age of 101, she sharply recalls the aspiring young Nureyev. There are excerpts from his dances, of course, and the documentary also explores his early life in his hometown of Ufa, Russia.

LL Cool J Rockumentary (MTV, 10-10:30 p.m.): Rapper LL Cool J is the focus of a documentary tracing the international star's life story, from his early days in New York City's Borough of Queens, to a Grammy Award ("Best Rap Solo," 1991), to the huge hit single "Going Back to Cali," and other successes. Performance clips include items like his appearance during the 1993 Presidential Inauguration and his Ivory Coast visit in 1988.
