Your Toxic Trash (PBS, 8:30-9 p.m.): If husbands think taking out the garbage has been one of life's little burdens, this program could make them long for the days when that simple task took care of the problem. In this special, hazardous household waste is defined, analyzed, and made the target of a plan of action for identification and disposal. Federal law is explained.

Viewers are asked eight quiz questions concerning the relative dangers of various forms of trash. Several locations are visited in a quest to explore the scope and variety of the danger posed by household trash, and areas are cited where regulations about trash are helping protect the environment.

The host is actor and environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. - the latter title earned by his using solar power in his home, driving an electric car, and sitting on various environmental boards.

Sting: Summoner's Travels (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): The rock star Sting has given his latest album, ``Ten Summoner's Tales,'' what I suppose could be called a literary twist, based as it is - though very loosely indeed - on Chaucer's ``The Canterbury Tales.'' Now Sting is on the road with a show that offers songs from the album like ``If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,'' ``Fields of Gold,'' and ``Love Is Stronger Than Justice.'' He's also performing Sting standards like ``Roxanne,'' ``Message in a Bottle,'' and ``Every Breath You Take'' from his tenure with The Police.

To launch its fall season, the pop-music series ``In the Spotlight'' follows Sting to Norway, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, catching live performances and following him in colorful locales in these countries. The cultures encountered are varied, but the reaction to his music seems universal: approval.

Later this fall, ``In the Spotlight'' programs feature Billy Joel, Sade, Joe Cocker, and Luther Vandross.
