Boston Teachers Walk Out

Classes were canceled in Boston schools yesterday as teachers launched a one-day strike, defying an 11th-hour injunction issued by a Superior Court judge.

City officials opened up 13 community centers for any elementary school students who showed up for classes. Boston Teachers Union president Edward Doherty said the centers would be staffed with social workers and recreation staff.

Judge Hiller Zobel had issued an injunction Tuesday barring the strike and scheduled a hearing yesterday on the dispute.

Although classes were canceled, school Superintendent Lois Harrison-Jones said teachers would be required to report to school for a ``professional development day,'' or forfeit their pay.
