Subsidized art menu

The editorial ``Shortchanging the Arts,'' March 29, rightly states the benefits of the arts, which ``nourish the members of a community.''

But it wrongly concludes that if something has a benefit it must be worthy of a government subsidy. I object to the government taxing me so that it can decide what art is suitable for me. I can provide my own ``nourishment.'' Rodger Virtue, Northridge, Calif.
