Mother Church Names Jenks As Its President For This Year

THE Christian Science Board of Directors has appointed Ruth Elizabeth Jenks as the new president of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, a position she will hold for one year.

Mrs. Jenks has had a broad, varied experience as a Christian Scientist. She has been in the healing practice since 1959, and also became a Christian Science teacher in 1970. Since 1976, she has given a number of public lectures on her church's teachings.

In a talk yesterday as the new president at the church's Annual Meeting, Jenks quoted a letter the church had received from a Christian Scientist in Russia, who had studied the church's daily Bible lesson - with citations from the Bible and ``Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'' by Mary Baker Eddy - during a period of rioting in Moscow. In the letter, the individual refers to gaining from the study a higher sense of law and of God's government of peoples.

In 1980, Jenks was appointed manager of the church's Department of Practitioners and Nursing Activities and two years later Clerk of The Mother Church. In 1983 she was elected to the Board of Directors. She retired from that job in 1990.
