WILLIAMSTOWN THEATRE FESTIVAL'S 40TH SEASON

* The remaining productions this summer are a diverse lot, reflecting the company's eclectic choices and audience interests. On the Main Stage in Adams Memorial Theatre:

Our Town (Through July 31): James Whitmore plays the stage manager in this Thornton Wilder masterpiece, directed by WTF's artistic director, Peter Hunt. A 1959 production featuring Thornton Wilder himself as the stage manager helped put the theater on the map.

The Sea Gull (Aug. 3 to 14): Blythe Danner, who played Nina in WTF's 1974 production, returns to play Arkadina in this Chekov comedy. This time around her daughter Gwyneth will be playing Nina. Directed by Austin Pendleton.

Love Letters (Aug. 17 to 28): John Tillinger directs this A.R. Gurney Jr. play whose title speaks for itself. A different pair of actors will perform each night from among a group including Kate Burton, Stockard Channing, Helen Hunt, Christopher Reeve, Maureen O'Sullivan, Robert Wagner, and others.

* The Other Stage (a smaller theater adjacent to the Main Stage) features works-in-progress and gives playwrights an opportunity to develop their pieces free from the pressure of reviews by theater critics. Sometimes panel discussions are held to open up a dialogue on the issues raised. The roster includes:

King of Coons (July 27 to Aug. 7): This drama by Michael Henry Brown tells the story of a black man's place in the early days of Hollywood. It is directed by Gordon Edelstein.

Whole Hearted (Aug. 10-21): A world premiere featuring Christopher Reeve in a fable by Quincy Long about the possibilities of love. Directed by Michael Bloom.

* Williamstown Theatre also offers free theater outdoors. This year ``Romeo and Juliet'' will be playing Aug. 11 to 20. In addition, weekend special events including literature, poetry, music, and play readings are held at the nearby Clark Art Institute.
