Monitor Critic Garners Features Award

Christopher Andreae, staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor, placed third in arts criticism in the 1994 Excellence in Feature Writing Competition sponsored by the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. Mr. Andreae won in the division of newspapers with a circulation of under 100,000.

More than 1,000 entries were received in four categories: general feature writing, short feature writing, commentary, and criticsm.

Newsday, a New York daily, swept the prizes for newspapers with a circulation of more than 250,000: Staff writer Cal Fussman won in the general feature category. Jack Sirica of Newsday won in short features, while Linda Winer won both the criticsm and commentary awards.

Placing first among newspapers with a circulation of 100,000 to 250,000 were Ronnie Crocker of the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press in general features; Dave Curtin of the Colorado Springs (Colo.) Gazette Telegraph in short features; Joanne Weintraub of the Milwaukee Journal in criticsm; and Stephen Heffner of the Providence (R.I.) Journal-Bulletin in commentary.

Winners among newspapers with a circulation under 100,000 were Cindy Kranz of the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star in general features; William Santiago of the San Juan (Puerto Rico) Star in short features; Tom Long of the Santa Cruz (Calif.) County Sentinel in criticism; and Mitch Stacy of the Gainesville (Fla.) Sun for commentary.
