No Loneliness in Love

AS the sun shines without restraint, so God loves without limit. His love is everywhere, and unconditionally available. If we're feeling alone, we can find comfort in a deeper understanding of our relation to God. ``God is Love,'' as the Bible says in First John (4:8), and man's purpose is to let divine Love's presence be manifest in all its radiance and splendor.

The comfort of Love is not a physical presence such as a cool morning breeze or the scene of a clear blue sky all around. It is an awareness of divine Mind, of God. It assures us that our well-being is safely snuggled in the hands of God, where no hurt, harm, or lack can intrude. Love's comfort and healing are felt in consciousness and known by the uplifting and encouraging effect they have on our outlook.

Loneliness is a suggestion that we have no place to go, no one who cares, or no one to turn to. But we can always go to God. He is our creator, and He always cares about us. No one understands better than He what brings the greatest cheer and blessing into our lives.

A few years after I graduated from college, I was worried that I would be living alone for the rest of my life. I was still single, hadn't dated in years, and saw absolutely no prospect of dating in the near future. I began to wonder if I was supposed to resign myself to remaining forever in solitude. But I also recognized that perhaps there was a better view of love and life I had yet to gain.

The love of God is spiritual and is abundantly bestowed upon each and every one of us. This love does not come to us from somewhere outside ourselves, as a package would come to us in the mail. It is expressed through us, as light passes through a window. Love always originates in God, not in a person, a place, or a thing. As divine Love's offspring, we express the love of Love without measure.

I turned to the Bible for guidance as to how God was loving me, and how I could be a better expression of Love. The book of Luke states, ``Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again'' (6:38). When we live true to our God-ordained purpose of expressing Love without limit, any fear of being isolated or neglected by others drops away.

I didn't have to wait for someone to want me before I could express love or feel loved by God. The ultimate care we can ever receive comes from our heavenly Father-Mother God. This care is evident in our ability to be happy, satisfied, and expectant of good, irrespective of whether we are single, married, dating, or not dating. Whether I had a personal companion or not, I saw, was unimportant compared to the fact that I could freely love and rejoice in the omnipresence of God's love at all times.

I quit worrying about my personal future and focused more on appreciating the all-encompassing love of God. And I became a much happier person. I stopped thinking about myself so much, and thought a lot more of God. It became easier for me to communicate with others and to share with them the love and assurance I was feeling from God as a result of my ongoing prayer.

In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, ``Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way'' (p. 454). To follow the leadings of Love is to be led right out of loneliness.

Over a period of two or three years, I strove to understand more of Love's presence and to express it in my everyday work. Loneliness gradually dropped away. And my fear of it has never returned.

Years later I did marry, and it has been a very blessed union. And I'm convinced that's because I learned first that true happiness is dependent, not on other people, but on God, divine Love.
