Prayer Heals Headaches

Bringing a spiritual perspective to world events and daily life.

DO you want permanent healing of headaches (or any other recurring, painful problem)? Instead of just controlling pain with drugs that may or may not work, or may have unwanted side effects, you can find that real healing is within reach right now! Christian Science tells how anyone can learn to find healing of any illness.

Such healing comes through prayer-the same healing method employed by Christ Jesus. This prayer doesn't consist of asking God to repair a broken bodily function, or of accepting affliction as part of God's will. According to Scripture, it involves learning more of God and the fact that His creation is good. This is not a God who commands suffering as a part of the divine plan or creates a man capable of illness.

The Bible's promise that God is loving and good is in the first chapter of its first book. And this message continues throughout the book. Toward the end, in First John, you can read, "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him" (4:16). Another book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, elaborates on the message that God is Love. One sentence says, "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (p. 494). Science and Health was written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science.

Several years ago the promise that God would meet my "human need" brought me permanent healing of headaches. I suffered from migraines, and it certainly seemed as though I needed to repair something. I didn't go to a medical specialist for diagnosis or treatment, but instead relied on prayer. Having received great benefits from prayer on previous occasions, I felt I could count on it again.

But just how could something intangible help me with this physical ailment? I started with what I knew about God. Imagine God with a headache. That seemed ludicrous. God, who is all good, can never have or create something unlike good. So neither can the man He created "in his own image" (Genesis 1:27). Therefore a headache, or any ache, was not mine. This understanding was divine Love "meeting" my own "human need."

Each time a headache began, I would declare to myself what I knew about this relationship between God and me. I would also ask my husband to pray for me, which he always did. This prayer was actually aimed at destroying my affliction by perceiving the error of it and by affirming the spiritual truth. I knew that Christian Science doesn't just help us get through an illness for a time, but heals it completely. In prayer I asked what I needed to know to be permanently healed. It came to me to remember that the facts of man's perfect identity applied to me, a part of God's perfect creation. In just a few minutes I was free of that headache, and have continued to be free for over seven years now.

So how can this healing help you? Well, the same spiritual truths of God and man are there for you. They have power at any time, anywhere. They are true for everyone. As His creation, you reflect God. Pain is not inevitable, because it is not the likeness of God. Without His power, pain cannot exist to dictate the terms under which you live. God's love is so great that no discord can touch you. He doesn't know what isn't good. He cannot fail to provide all that is good for you, because he is Love itself.

Adopting this view of God and creation leaves no room for you to have thoughts of evil. The incorrect belief that you are a mortal sufferer can no longer remain. The understanding of this must then be confirmed in physical healing, if that is what is needed.

God did not make anyone to suffer. By studying the laws of God, stated in the Bible, you can prove this fact to be true. Through prayer, headaches, like all evils, can be healed once and for all.
