Worth Noting on TV

US Open (CBS, 2-7 p.m. EDT): This is the first year both the men's and women's finals will be played on the same day. Be warned: Anything can happen during tennis's Grand Slam free-for-all. Many of the top seeds have already been knocked out of contention, but last year's winners Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf were still in contention at press time.

The Lion King (Disney, 7-8:30 p.m.): The 1994 blockbuster smash makes its TV debut. Terrific animation and an all-star cast helped make the first Disney animated feature based on an original story its highest-grossing movie of all time. Jeremy Irons, Whoopi Goldberg, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and James Earl Jones provide voices.

Emmy Awards (ABC, 8-11 p.m. EDT): It's the golden anniversary of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and nostalgia will figure more heavily than sequins during what's being billed as "television's biggest night." Paul Reiser ("Mad About You") hosts.

American Playhouse (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning "Passion" - a musical essay on the nature of love - glories in its melodrama with an intensity that will either enthrall or repel viewers. Donna Murphy is outstanding as Signora Fosca, a lonely woman who finds transcendence in her unrequited love for a soldier. (The opening scene contains nudity.)

Happy Days (Nickelodeon, 8 p.m.-12 midnight): Prepare to rock with the Fonz, Richie, and the gang during four days of the top 40 coolest episodes of the classic sitcom.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (CBS, 8-10 p.m.): The 1989 movie has Indy searching for his missing father - Sean Connery in a great turn - and the mythic Holy Grail. Harrison Ford is in fine form as the intrepid archaeologist.
