A Resource for Spirituality And Well-Being

Bringing a spiritual perspective to daily life

There's a book that can help you discover a "new" universe - a universe that has always existed but cannot be seen with the naked eye. It is wholly spiritual. It is where we see ourselves as we really are. This book gives us a vision of the universe as it was "in the beginning," according to the Bible, when "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31).

"Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures," a resource for finding that you live in this universe, was published in 1875 by Mary Baker Eddy, who also founded the Monitor. It explains that our lives are governed by God's laws, which keep everything in its rightful place. Christ Jesus both taught and demonstrated the healing power of these laws. Learning about these laws, and about how to obey them, maintains the activity of the body, its organs and functions, and brings to daily life a deep peace and contentment.

Science and Health turns popular beliefs about God and existence upside down. For example, Mrs. Eddy wrote that "when we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness" (Pg. 264). This speaks of power as lying in spiritual understanding, not in physical action.

I first picked up this book hoping that it might help me to overcome some of my fears. And I found in it a storehouse of spiritual truths. I discovered facts about my identity that I never knew before: I have a spiritual identity that is the image and likeness of God. I have an indestructible, spiritual relationship to God. I read on Page 361, "As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being." I would never be doing anything alone again!

Through learning these and other spiritual truths, I lost a lot of my fear. Spiritualization of my thought had begun contributing directly to my personal well-being! I saw how so many of our problems stem from not knowing who we are or who God is.

How do you feel about seeing yourself as a spiritual idea of God, the image of Love (yes, the image of divine Love)? Could you stop believing that you are mortal, essentially made up of flesh, blood, bones? Could you see yourself instead as spiritual and perfect, as including in your identity home, health, prosperity, right activity, companionship - everything necessary for living your life to the full? Could you accept that you are already perfect, and that this perfection is your divine right? The Bible says that you and I have "dominion" over the whole earth (see Gen. 1:26). Could you accept that you have that dominion? That you have power and authority over all the experiences in your day?

Science and Health discusses a view of God you might be unfamiliar with. But if you ever had difficulty reconciling a loving God with all the pain, evil, and suffering you see around you, then you might find it logical that He is, God is, the source, origin, foundation, and power of the universe, and is wholly good! Eddy described God as "the great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence" (Science and Health, Pg. 587).

A testimonial that begins on Page 691 of this book, which is the textbook of Christian Science, tells what reading Science and Health did for one individual: "The first words of the 'spiritual sense of the Lord's Prayer' [see Pages 16-17], telling of our Father-Mother God, gave me a glimpse of heavenly light.... The truth of man's spiritual being dawned on my consciousness. I realized I was not subject to mortal laws, as I had been taught all my life. ... my tears began to flow; all the years of bitterness, hate, and fear melted away.... That day began the outward and inward conscious healing, - mental and physical."
