A Sweet Spring Surprise

First haircuts, first dates, first paychecks - first-time events are memorable. And today, our broadleaf linden on the front lawn was to have its first trim. For nearly six years, it has been a specimen of enormous grace and beauty, especially in winter with its red-tipped branches contrasting with stark urban snows, and now most particularly with its thick pyramidal foliage.

The arborist explained that all trees have their idiosyncrasies and dimensions. He placed the small metal stepladder from our pantry near the base of the tree and stood on it. Parting the wide, sea-green leaves, he peered inside as if searching through a dark closet for hidden gems. And gems he found! "When those wee robins up high leave the comfort of their nest, we'll be back."
