Internet scam for licenses

Motorists with revoked US driver's licenses thought they had a way around the law: buying an International Driver's Permit (IDP) over the Internet. Some drivers paid as much as $300, not realizing that, in accord with international law, such permits are not recognized in the country in which they're issued.

To get around this legality, some companies register the IDP using a foreign address. But beware if you are stopped by police: Different addresses on your car registration and license could raise a red flag.

IDPs are a convenience to drivers overseas; a valid US license is recognized in most countries. Two agencies are authorized to issue IDPs in the US: the State Department and the American Automobile Association. An IDP should cost $10.
