SHOWS WORTH NOTING FOR MAY 1-7

Listings are not necessarily recommended by the Monitor. All times Eastern, check local listings.

SATURDAY 5/1

The Killer Storm (History Channel, 9-11 p.m.): Studying weather is a science; predicting it isn't. This riveting documentary revolves around hurricane Grace, even as it looks at the larger phenomenon of storms. The images are stunning, the reenactments worthy of Hollywood.

SUNDAY 5/2

Wild Europe (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): This six-hour series takes viewers on a colorful and engaging tour of two-dozen countries. The first hour stops in undersea meadows off the south of France and at the English Channel's "artificial reef."

Celebrate the Century (CNN, 9-10 p.m.): 'Tis the season to reminisce on the century. Many TV channels are doing it, but this 10-part retrospective is the best so far, at least judging by the first two episodes. Christopher Plummer hosts this global examination of social, political, and cultural events told through stunning collection of rarely seen archival footage.

Noah's Ark (NBC, 9-11 p.m.): A spectacular cast headed by Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen and a wild and woolly comic approach to the subject make this two-part biblical story one of the cheeriest offerings of the season. (see story above)

TUESDAY 5/4

Another World (NBC, 2-3 p.m.): The network's longest-running soap opera celebrates its 35th anniversary today. But it also marks the final days of the daytime drama. It's being dumped for "Passions," which will premire in July.

WEDNESDAY 5/5

The 34th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards (CBS, 8-11 p.m.): It could be a big night for Faith Hill. She has been nominated for six awards, including top female vocalist and album of the year. Hill, the Dixie Chicks, Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride, and Garth Brooks are scheduled to perform.

Live From Lincoln Center (PBS, 8-11 p.m.): The New York City Ballet celebrates its 50th anniversary with chore-grapher Peter Martins's traditional staging of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake."

Law & Order (NBC, 10-11 p.m.): Julia Roberts, the real-life girlfriend of series co-star Benjamin Bratt, guests stars as a fund-raiser who's involved in a millionaire's murder in the series' 200th episode.

THURSDAY 5/6

Journey to the New World (HBO, 7:30-8 p.m.): A charming tale about an ordinary girl named "Mem," an English immigrant who travelled to America on the Mayflower and befriends an English-speaking American Indian. Sugary moments abound, but the story does pay close attention to historical details, period sets and costumes.

Mystery! (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Detective Hetty Wainthropp (Patricia Routledge) returns and goes undercover to solve four cases. In the first episode, she poses as an artist to find the writer of the "Poison Pen" letters in an English village. (TV-PG)
