SATURDAY 1/8

National Football League Playoff Games (ABC, 12:30 p.m.): The Super Bowl playoffs begin. The Tennessee Titans host the Buffalo Bills, who have benched QB Doug Flutie for Rob Johnson. The day's other game: Detroit at Washington at 4:05 p.m. On Sunday, Dallas visits Minnesota, 12:35 p.m. (Fox) and Miami goes to Seattle, 4:05 p.m. (CBS).

SUNDAY 1/9

The Virginian (TNT, 8-10 p.m.): Bill Pullman stars in and directs this made-for-TV western, based on a 1902 novel (see story above).

Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (Showtime, 8-11 p.m.): With fire from the belly, Brian Dennehy brings mist to the audience's eyes as Willy Loman, the world-weary salesman in Arthur Miller's timeless masterpiece. Taped live on Broadway, Dennehy's sterling performance is matched by Elizabeth Franz as his devoted wife. The story revolves around unfulfilled ambitions, uncertain futures, and the American Dream.

Malcolm in the Middle (Fox, 8:30-9 p.m.): A fresh, funny, and original midseason comedy makes its debut. The series shows the life of an otherwise typical kid (played by likable Frankie Muniz) with an unusually high IQ.

MONDAY 1/10

Eleanor Roosevelt (PBS, check local listings): A compelling portrait of one of America's most influential and admired women of the 20th century. The documentary traces her life from her birth into a prominent family to her marriage and political partnership with Franklin D. Roosevelt and her dedication to social justice and equality. "She was tough as nails," says historian Geoffrey Ward. "In fact, she was one of the best politicians of the 20th century."

PICK OF THE WEEK

The Crossing (A&E, 8-10 p.m.): Starring Jeff Daniels, this simple story tells of George Washington's daring nighttime crossing of the Delaware River to win a crucial battle in the Revolutionary War, a victory made more remarkable because not one American was lost (see story above).

TUESDAY 1/11

NYPD Blue (ABC, 10-11 p.m.): In this seventh-season premire, a couple of bad cops try to pin a murder on an innocent man, and detective Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) has the unpleasant task of uncovering the conspiracy. Meanwhile, Andy's young son helps him overcome his grief over losing his wife. A terrific return to the air for the award-winning show.

THURSDAY 1/13

EGG (PBS, check local listings): From the award-winning producers of WNET New York's "City Arts," EGG presents interesting stories from around the country in a cinma vrit style and explores how the arts can enrich our lives.

Mystery! (PBS, check local listings): Detectives Dave Creegan (Robson Green) and Susan Taylor (Nicola Walker) pursue a computer whiz with an obsession for female hair, which leads to kidnapping and murder.
