Do not bring your own calculators to the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test, middle- and high-school students in Palm Beach County were told. State officials would supply the calculators - Casio's model HS-10 - they wanted used. There was just one problem: It yielded wrong answers when math problems were entered too quickly. That was embarrassing, education officials conceded, but overall scores shouldn't be affected significantly. As for Casio, the company now will try to calculate why, for example, 3 times 3 times 3 equaled 81, not 27.

BUT THE BILLS STILL FIND HER

Here's a riddle: How can Evelyn Nowak's mailing address have changed five times when she hasn't moved in 22 years? Answer: an annexation of the Chippewa Falls, Wis., neighborhood where she lives, substitution of house numbers for her postal route, and other updates. Even if more changes come, however, she's staying put. "I like it here," she says.

Hungry Americans vote for favorite restaurant chains

Diners like Romano's Macaroni Grill best, according to Restaurants and Institutions magazine's annual survey of chain eateries. Not only was the Dallas-based restaurant voted best overall chain, but it also won the dinner-house category. More than 1,800 consumers participated in the survey, which took into account such factors as food quality and atmosphere. Winners in the other categories:
