Resources for solo travelers

"Solo travel can have special advantages simply because you can tailor it to your own tastes," says Eleanor Berman, author of "Traveling Solo" (Globe Pequot Press, $16.95).

She offers ideas and advice for men, as well as women, who travel alone, but don't necessarily want to be by themselves.

Learn a sport at a tennis camp or golf school. Stretch your mind with a learning vacation - join an archaeological dig, learn to take picture-perfect photographs, or attend summer school in London. Get back to nature on a safari, a sailing ship, or a birding weekend.

In her guide, Ms. Berman provides dozens of specific suggestions for solo vacationers of all ages and interests, with listings that include comprehensive contact information.
