SUNDAY 4/23

American Experience: George Wallace - Settin' the Woods on Fire (PBS, April 23 and 24, check local listings): Wallace was a moderate liberal before he discovered how bad that was come election time in Alabama. So he became one of the most notorious racists in his era when he ran for governor on an anti-integration platform. But there's much more to his story than this, as he sought forgiveness for his hate mongering later in life among those whom he had wronged. The thoughtful documentary requires the same of us.

MONDAY 4/24

Blues Clues (Nickelodeon, 9:30-10 a.m.): The revered show for the youngest among us does an unusually fine job teaching little ones about the meaning of signs. There are many kinds all around us, and learning to read them is part of everyone's day. Later in the piece, host Steve introduces a little story in American Sign Language, getting "help" from his preschool audience (the viewer).

The Three Stooges (ABC, 8-10 p.m.): The story of Larry, Curly, and Moe is slightly more appealing than the threesome's brand of slapstick. This film may not be too analytical, but it takes a warm view of the changing trio (including two Curlys) and their exploitation by Hollywood execs.

TUESDAY 4/25

Nova: Stationed in the Stars (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): Once again the distinguished series zeroes in on cutting-edge science. This time it's the International Space Station. The station is in crisis, and our partners, the Russians, have not delivered a critical piece of the puzzle. The gripping documentary outlines the ambitious project and suggests what may happen on the road to Mars.

WEDNESDAY 4/26

Miracle on the Mountain: The Kincaid Family Story (CBS, 9-11 p.m.): A dysfunctional family plans to spend quality time together at a mountain retreat when their little plane crashes in a storm. Predictable, but entertaining family story. Patty Duke and William Devane star.

THURSDAY 4/27

Friends (NBC, 8-8:30 p.m.): During sweeps month, Bruce Willis guest stars as Paul, the overly protective father of Ross's girlfriend, Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden).
