Sunday 9/10
The 52nd Emmy Awards (ABC, 8-11 p.m.; preshow begins at 7 p.m.): TV's most coveted awards are handed out. "The Sopranos" and "West Wing" are tied with 18 nominations apiece. Comic Gary Shandling hosts.
Search for Atlantis (A&E, 8-10 p.m.): This fascinating documentary looks at the history of the search for Atlantis. From Plato's description of the utopian society swallowed up by an earthquake and flood, to Columbus's search for "Antilla" (his name for Atlantis), to the founding of New Age religious movements based on its myth, Atlantis has an intriguing history. Ted Danson narrates.
Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller (Pay per view, 9 p.m.): The theater is coming more often to the small screen. This is the first offering of the Broadway TV Network - "Smokey Joe" is the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history. Songs like, "Ruby, Ruby," "Dance with Me," and "Kansas City Here I Come," and terrific jazz dance are finally made available nationwide.
Monday 9/11
Castaway (BBC America, 8-9 p.m. each night through Thursday): Now this is reality TV. A cross-section of British society - 36 men, women, and children - are taken to a rugged Scottish island with minimal creature comforts. Here they must till the soil, raise chickens and pigs, and live the hard life for a year. It's no contest - it's a genuine social experiment. Gripping TV.
Wednesday 9/13
The Latin Grammy Awards (CBS, 9-11 p.m.): Live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (LARAS) presents the first Latin awards show for best songs, performances, and albums.
Friday 9/15
The Summer Olympics (NBC, 7:30 p.m.): Opening ceremony will feature more than 12,000 entertainers performing in front of 110,000 spectators at Stadium Australia. The main event will spotlight a parade of athletes and lighting of the Olympic flame. Hosted by Bob Costas and Katie Couric.
