HE COULD TRY WEIGHT-LIFTING

When Anthony Annarino was sentenced to 2-1/2 years behind bars in a federal corruption case, he expected to do the time at a minimum-security prison. "Maybe," joked the former tax collector for the city of Providence, R.I., I'll sharpen up on my golf game." The Bureau of Prisons, which can decide where a convict is sent, wasn't amused. So it shipped Annarino to a medium-security facility in upstate New York, where he'll have to share a cell and be locked in from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Golf, by the way, is not among the amenities available at any federal prison.

IT WAS COMFY, ALL RIGHT

Maybe the burglar at a medical clinic in Madrid thought he was on such a roll that he could spare a few minutes relaxing. Whatever the case, the thief, who was prying open a locked strongbox, put down his tools to try out an ergonomic chair. Big mistake. He dozed off and was still there the next morning, when employees found him and quietly telephoned police. The cops shook him awake and arrested him.

Only the first few of summer's leaves have assumed their red, orange, or yellow autumnal hues so far. But already snow skiers and the industry that serves them are turning their thoughts to winter. Example: SKI magazine, whose 13th annual guide to North American resorts appears in its October issue. The overall winner: Vail, Colo. Quebec's Tremblant was rated No. 1 in the East; Boyne Highlands, Mich. was tops in the Midwest. Based on a survey of readers, the following are the magazine's choices as the 10 best ski resorts on the continent:

1. Vail, Colo.

2. Deer Valley, Utah

3. Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada

4. Sun Valley, Idaho

5. Aspen, Colo.

6. Snowmass, Colo.

7. Beaver Creek, Colo.

8. Keystone, Colo.

9. Park City, Utah

10. Breckenridge, Colo.
