Keeping Track: What speeding costs you

A ticket can add 16 percent to car insurance

Everybody knows that getting pulled over for speeding often means a bumping up of auto-insurance premiums. But how big a hit?

About these ads

A study of online car-insurance providers conducted by FinanCenter.com, a for-profit consumer-advocate company specializing in personal finance, shows that a single citation can boost insurance rates by as much as 16 percent.

"I think that all insurance companies perceive a greater risk. Some attribute more weight to that risk than others do," says Sherri Neasham, CEO of FinanCenter.com. "Some companies are after a certain target market. They're better attuned and willing to take certain risks than others, and their premium price will be lower because of it."
