Percentage of Americans who own homes peaks

Real estate agents have been busy of late. The economic boom has boosted home ownership to an all-time high, according to new figures released by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Third-quarter figures for 2000 show that there are now 71.6 million homeowners in the United States (or 67.7 percent of the population, see graph below).

All-time-high-ownership rates were reported for ethnic minorities as a whole (48.2 percent), households headed by females (53.3 percent), and married couples under the age of 35 (61 percent).
