Lose a watch? Unclaimed assets abound.

A 1971 watch featuring former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley celebrating St. Patrick's Day was one of 30,000 unclaimed items sold at auction this month by the state of Illinois. State treasuries across the US currently hold more than $63 billion in cash and assets, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators. Unclaimed cash is held in state pension funds. Treasuries also hang onto baubles left in safety deposit boxes, as well as checks, stocks, and insurance policies.
