What's on TV

The following are not necessarily recommended by the Monitor. All times Eastern, check local listings.

Saturday 10/20

Baseball Playoffs (Fox, 4 p.m. for ALCS; and 8:20 p.m. for NLCS): The Seattle Mariners will take on the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the American League championships (at New York), while over in the National League, the Arizona Diamondbacks will compete against the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta. Best-of-seven series continues through Oct. 25, if necessary.

Murder Among Friends (Pax, 9-11 p.m.): A young man is accused of murdering his father, but one of his friends at acting school believes he's innocent. So she hires a private investigator, and

the two of them follow a twisted path to find the truth. It's not ingenious, but it is a mildly entertaining puzzle.

Live from Manhattan: Concert for New York (VH1, 8 p.m.-midnight): A live four-hour benefit concert features Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Melissa Etheridge, Macy Gray, U2's Bono and the Edge, and many more - all to raise money for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on New York. Other stars making appearances include Jerry Seinfeld, David Spade, Chris Rock, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Sunday 10/21

In the Time of the Butterflies (Showtime, 8-9:30 p.m.): The lovely Salma Hayek stars as Minerva Mirabal in this story of resistance to Trujillo's repressive regime in the Dominican Republic. The story is a tad heavy-handed in its telling, but Edward James Olmos plays the cruel dictator with creepy power.

Monday 10/22

Blue's Clues (Nick Jr., 8-8:30 p.m.): Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper welcome a new arrival on this award-winning show for preschoolers. Lisa Kudrow of "Friends" voices the role of the animated baby stork, providing much of the zany fun and education.

Friday 10/26

As Told By Ginger (Nickelodeon, 8:30-9 p.m.): This darling lesson in the fine art of witch hunting (and how we shouldn't do it) kicks off a week of spooky fun on the kid network. Ginger participates in the school Halloween show about the Salem witch trials and is falsely accused of vandalism by her arch rival. This special musical keeps kid concerns in view without losing the moral message.
