Ty Tryon is just like any other 17-year-old in many respects. He is still growing into his size-13 shoes, and he has an English paper due Friday at his high school in Orlando, Fla.

Tryon's job application was met with resounding approval Monday in the final stage of PGA Tour qualifying school. He made one of the most gut-wrenching days in golf look like child's play, shooting a 66 in West Palm Beach, Fla., to make him the youngest player in history to earn his professional card. "It's just unbelievable," Tryon said. "Tonight when I go to sleep, I'll know that I'm on the PGA Tour."

He'll have to wait seven months. The PGA Tour adopted a new policy in September that players be 18 years old before they can become members. Tryon turns 18 June 2.

Heisman contenders

Quarterbacks Ken Dorsey (Miami), Joey Harrington (Oregon), Eric Crouch (Nebraska), and Rex Grossman (Florida) were picked Tuesday as finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Rudy Riska, the executive director of the Heisman Memorial Trophy Trust, said a fifth player could be invited later this week to the ceremony in New York. The Heisman will be awarded Saturday night at the Marriott Marquis, because of damage to the Downtown Athletic Club during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It will mark the first time in 67 years that the trophy will be presented somewhere other than the club.

Baseball's woes

Players union head Donald Fehr warned owners that baseball faces big problems if there isn't a quick resolution to the league's plans to eliminate two teams.

Fehr said Wednesday that contraction has to be settled before other issues - such as revenue sharing, player contracts, and scheduling - can be properly addressed. He also worries that free agency will be hurt.

Montreal and Minnesota are the leading candidates to fold, but an injunction mandates that the Twins play next season. The appeal by baseball to lift the injunction will be heard Dec. 27.

'I still hang out with my friends at the mall.'
