Identity theft tops list of consumer woes

Guard those credit-card and Social Security numbers closely: You never know how they'll be used. Of the 204,000 consumer-fraud complaints compiled by the Federal Trade Commission last year, a full 42 percent involved identity theft. Other top complaints involved Internet auctions, ordered goods that were delivered late or not at all, and items of lower quality than was advertised.
