THAT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ME

"It's only human to make mistakes," Lars Hammer said. Now, he's a soccer referee, but he wasn't excusing himself for blowing a crucial call in an important game. Rather, he's trying to hide his disappointment that, through some foulup, his picture didn't make it onto 1.3 million new postage stamps honoring the 100th anniversary of Norway's Soccer Federation as planned. Oh, there's a picture of a referee on them, all right, but no one knows who he is. The postal service, which paid for the rights to use Hammer's image, is trying urgently to track down and identify the mystery man.

NEWS UPDATE: SUCCESS AT LAST

Perhaps you recall an item in this space Jan. 18 about a grass-roots campaign to win induction into the National Toy Hall of Fame for Raggedy Ann. Four times, the floppy doll had been rejected, and her prospects didn't look bright this year either. But on Wednesday, despite competition from 89 other nominees, she made it.

Sissy Spacek didn't win an Oscar this time around, but she and her film "In the Bedroom," along with mystery-drama "Memento," dominated an alternative awards show March 23. The Independent Spirit Awards honor lower-budget films that are financed, at least in part, independently and that take on provocative subjects. A short list of this year's winners:
