Then help may be on the way, thanks – if you please – to a teenager. Iris Koser, a German inventor, has developed the "merciless" bed, which is activated by an alarm clock. It raises the mattress about half an inch per minute until the sleeper is spilled onto the floor.

Occasionally, police hardly have to lift a finger to catch criminal suspects. Late last month in Oberwil, Switzerland, was one of those times. The quarry: a 19-year-old accused of stealing expensive camera equipment from a private home. In haste, he left a copy of his résumé behind. "His name and address were on it," a police spokesman said. "So I don't suppose he was very surprised when we paid him a little visit."

Ranking the richest elected public officials, wannabes

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R), who spent a reported $73 million of his own funds on his successful 2001 campaign, is the US's wealthiest politician, according to Forbes. The magazine's new list also includes candidates for governor in New York and Texas. Forbes's 10 richest US politicians (with their estimated net worth, in millions, unless otherwise noted):
