Easy come, easy go

There's good natured, and then there's Letha Schmitt of Pensacola, Fla., who laughs off as "a hoot" the bank error that made her - briefly - a multimillionaire. Schmitt says she never even noticed that the certified check she carried for three days was made out for more nearly $49 million, and wouldn't have tried to cash it, anyway. "What you sow, you reap," she told the Pensacola News Journal. The bank canceled the draft, explaining that a teller had mistakenly entered the serial number in the space marked "amount."

Added mystery on the menu

"With the beef, it's very difficult to really tell by looking at it," says Al Bushway, a food scientist at the University of Maine. But in ground turkey, "one certainly would notice." The culinary additive in question? Blueberries, in a project developed with $30,000 from the state's Wild Blueberry Association and slated for taste tests in the federal school lunch program. Schools in four other states serve prune burgers and cherry burgers. The Agriculture Department says fruit can juice up low-fat meats and may have other health benefits.
