I'd bring style to the job

Supermodel Carmen Kass has graced the covers of Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, and GQ magazines. She has strutted the runways of fashion houses in Paris, New York, and Milan in ultrachic creations by Chanel, Christian Dior, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, and Versace, to name a few. Her earnings last year alone were $5 million. And she isn't yet 26. So what does one in such a situation do to break out of her rut? Answer: run for a seat in the European Parliament from her native Estonia, of course. But what about her youth? Her lack of political experience? Hey, no problem, a spokesman said, adding: "Carmen has reached the top in her own field, and this will enable her to gain influence in the arena of ... debate."

NAACP awards keep up 'Image' of nonwhite stars

Is an awards program for people of color superfluous when African-Americans can pick off the top Oscars, as Denzel Washington and Halle Berry did in 2002? No, says the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It continues to hold its annual Image Awards to honor works by and about people of color. The event, held last weekend, in Los Angeles, will be broadcast Thursday night by Fox. The winners in the two most exclusive categories:

Movie: "The Fighting Temptations"
Actor: Cuba Gooding Jr., in "Radio"
Actress: Queen Latifah, in "Bringing Down the House"
Supporting actor: Morgan Freeman, in "Bruce Almighty"
Supporting actress: Alfre Woodward, in "Radio"
LITERATURE
Fiction: "Love," by Toni Morrison
Nonfiction: "Why I Love Black Women," by Michael Eric Dyson
Children's work: "My Brother Martin: A Sister Remembers Growing Up with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.," by Christine King Farris
