Tuning in: On TV this week.

Sunday Nov. 21

The Wool Cap (TNT, 8-10 p.m.): Getting a jump on the Christmas season, this poignant film stars William H. Macy as a recovering alcoholic and mute, whose heroic record in Vietnam was eclipsed by a personal tragedy back home. When he is offered the opportunity to redeem himself by helping a young girl, he reaches out to God. Without saying a word, the great actor can draw a tear from the driest eye. The film's pace is slow, but the end definitely justifies the means here.

Back When We Were Grownups (CBS, 9-11 p.m.): Blythe Danner stars as a widow who wonders what her life would have been if she had married her high school sweetheart. When she calls her old beau, she gets the chance to find out. Mercifully short on sentimentality, the Hallmark Hall of Fame production is long on practical inspiration.

Tuesday Nov. 23

Samantha: An American Girl (The WB 8-10, encore on Thursday, 8-10 p.m.): Young girls who own the Samantha doll and storybook - and their moms - may be especially interested in this sweet story, set in 1904, about the orphan Samantha and her best friend, Nellie, a little Irish immigrant who loses her parents, too. Mia Farrow glistens in the holiday tale as Samantha's "Gran-Mary."

Thursday Nov. 25

America's Choir: The Story of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (PBS, check local listings): Characterized as a "commemorative portrait" by its filmmakers, the special pays loving tribute to the musicianship and traditions of the choir. Particularly engaging are comments by renowned artists who have sung with the all-volunteer choir. Walter Cronkite hosts.
