Tuning in: On TV this week.

Sunday Aug. 2

Beach Girls (Lifetime, 8-9 p.m.): Light summer reading becomes light summer soap opera. Rob Lowe stars as a widower who returns to a small beach community where he had met his wife 20 years earlier. His grieving 16-year-old daughter immediately connects with an old friend of her mother's and therein begins the tension between dad and daughter.

Wanted (TNT, 10-11 p.m.): Shot in gritty, dark tones with jazzy editing techniques, this FBI procedural borrows from a variety of others in the genre, and never met a cliché it didn't like. Despite the familiarity of characters and dialogue, it manages a fairly gripping style of storytelling. Macho agents go after the 100 worst criminals at large with amazing success - and a good deal of violence. It raises a timely question - why are so many TV shows justifying torture these days?

Tuesday Aug. 2

Meet Mr. Mom (NBC, 8-9 p.m.): Taking its cue from one of the "Nanny" shows, this new NBC reality TV offering is anything but nasty, as two husbands take on family responsibilities while their wives go off to a luxury spa. The women watch their families on closed-circuit TV, judging their husbands' performances in housekeeping, nutrition, and parenting.

Thursday Aug. 4

Small Space, Big Style (HGTV, 8-9 p.m.): Tiny homes and teeny apartments can still be classy, functional, and cozy. It takes a good deal of imagination, excellent taste, and only a bit of cash to create so much living space inside a few hundred square feet. This engaging series tours the country looking for sizable design tips in slight places. But larger homes and apartments can benefit from the show's insights into light, color, and versatility.
