Knitting in the Dark for Carl Henrikson

Sometimes when he drives
Carl asks "Did you see that?"
and his wife says "Yes"
though her head is bowed
as in prayer.
"She even knits in the dark"
he tells me, a shine in his eyes.
She knitted their sons in the dark
with no needles or thread, I want to say.
One summer their son Peter
worked in a loom shop in Boulder
and chose the best pieces of bird's eye maple
to make a loom for her.
"It works so beautifully," Carl says
shaking his head with wonder.
All these years
the fabric of their marriage:
the tight weave.
