State fairs to remember

Pig races. Live music. Pumpkins with their own gravitational pull. It's state fair season, so gas up the car and bring your appetite for chili and homebaked pies. Here's a sampling of what's coming up in your neck of the woods.

Oct. 14 - Nov. 6
Performers include Gloria Trevi, Big & Rich, Beck, and Rob Thomas.

Hutchinson, Kan.
Sept. 9 - 18
Entertainment includes tractor pulls and auto races, tigers brought in from India, and readings by Garrison Keillor.

Oct. 27 - Nov. 13
There will be a lawnmower showdown - bring it on! Entertainment includes the " '80s Invasion Tour" featuring Great White, Warrant, and Firehouse.

West Springfield
Sept. 16 - Oct. 2
Features the "Avenue of States" and a concert by Gretchen Wilson.

Oklahoma City
Sept. 15 - 25
Disney on Ice will present "Finding Nemo." There's a petting zoo, chats with Oklahoma newspaper columnists, motorcycle races, and live music featuring the Spin Doctors.

South Dakota
Sept. 3 - 10
Taste who wins the barbecue-beef and chili cookoffs. Kids will love "Funky Farmworks," a live stage show that explores the fun side of science.

Sept. 30 - Oct. 23
An 800-lb. slab of butter will be carved into the likeness of Elvis (insert your own Elvis joke here.) Performers include Hoobastank and Cowboy Troy.

Salt Lake City
Sept. 8 - 18
In addition to a talent search, headliners Styx and REO Speedwagon will take the main stage.
