December Passage

December days turn in
as leaves of rhododendron fold
against the cold.
Hardly the days begin
when darkness falls.
The eye of noon
grows dim too soon
as winter calls.
Yet there's a need
December fills ...
Her sleeping hills
cradle the seed
of spring.
