Tubegazing: 'Liza with a Z'

- Gloria Goodale

Liza With a Z (Showtime, April 1, 8 p.m. EST)

"Liza with a Z" is one of those happy combinations of a dance maestro (Bob Fosse) and one of the industry's consummate stage icons, Liza Minnelli, both at the peak of their powers. This special is a digital restoration of a long-lost concert performance from 1972, and you don't even have to be a Liza fan to see what's so special about Judy Garland's daughter in full bloom. She is irresistible playing the wounded waif from "Cabaret" and stunning in her Halston duds. Fosse may never have had a better showcase than Liza, if for no other reason than she makes it all seem so delicious. Listen to that glorious voice, open yourself to her touching vulnerability, and if you aren't a Liza fan now, you may just become one. Grade: A
