What I'm actually reading is Uncle Scrooge No. 355. have a subscription to Uncle Scrooge comics and they're wonderful because they're in this glossy, color format. I've been reading Uncle Scrooge since I was a little kid. Donald Duck and Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge have been a steady influence on my life. My favorite Uncle Scrooge author is Carl Barks, and in this issue I just got in the mail yesterday there's a story from 1954 by Carl Barks, and then there are also some brand new stories by new authors. When I was a kid, we didn't have a lot of money and we would get a book for my birthday and I would get a book for Christmas and usually it was something like Walter Farley's "The Black Stallion." My mom took me to the library once a week but I was only able to take one book out of the library at a time and so I read comic books. They were cheap and they were fun and they were the mainstay of my literary life – and still are.
I'm not a very complicated person. I'm not someone who actually sits and analyzes something. If I pick up and book and I don't want to put it down ... that's good enough for me. Nora Roberts is amazing. She's so prolific but you can always count on her; she's very consistent. I like her writing style.
I like Bob Crais. I like Elmore Leonard. I like Robert B. Parker. I love that [Parker] has such a clear sense of his moral code. He's such a wordsmith. His books are so clean – they're entirely linear. When I decided to move into crime fiction I used him as a model for my own Stephanie Plum series.
I have a whole bunch of stuff on my iPod. I like happy music. I like music with energy. The two Rolling Stones albums I've been playing are "A Bigger Bang" and "Rarities." I just saw them [in concert]. I like Rascal Flatts and Shania Twain. Eminem is one of the most talented people out there. I like his humor. I think he's very clever, very innovative, very bold.
My favorite television show is [HBO's] Entourage. When it first came on television I tried watching it, and I couldn't get into it. It wasn't until the box sets came out and I watched all the episodes – I'd sit down and watch four in a row – that I got totally hooked into it. I love the characters. I think Jeremy Piven is amazing. The last thing I saw [at the movies] was Cars. I love movies, mostly when they come out on DVD as opposed to going to the theater. I'm looking forward to seeing Pirates of the Caribbean 2 – I'll definitely go to the theater to see that. It's Johnny Depp, how could anyone not like him?
