As an overall sports power, no school compares to Stanford

Many fans of intercollegiate sports chant "We're No. 1!" to celebrate the achievements of a single team. But on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., the cry goes up for the athletic program's overall excellence. For the 12th consecutive year, Stanford has captured the Directors' Cup, which is awarded to the program that compiles the most points for its postseason results in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. In the academic year just past, Stanford won national championships in women's cross-country and tennis, was a runner-up in men's water polo and women's indoor track and field, and had 11 other teams in the Top 10 of their respective sports. The standings for the year in the Directors' Cup, a joint effort of the US Sports Academy, USA Today, and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics:

1. Stanford

2. UCLA

3. University of Texas

4. University of North Carolina

5. University of Florida

6. Notre Dame

7. University of California

8. Duke University

9. University of Georgia

10. University of Southern California
