Sentenced Home

(PBS, Tuesday, May 15, 10 p.m.): This heartbreaking documentary follows the lives of three Cambodians who fled the Khmer Rouge reign of terror in the 1970s and settled as permanent residents in Seattle. Decades later, they now face a forced return to the country of their birth due to a post-9/11 law requiring deportation for noncitizens who commit a felony. Each committed a crime at one point in his life. Two of the three are now stable, employed family men. Under current laws, they have no right to appeal the sentence. With no pretense of balance, this is a quietly anguished plea for the preservation of basic human rights and argues that a country of laws without heart stands to lose its soul. Grade:A–
