Democrats and the National Rifle Association have reached an agreement on the first federal gun-control legislation since 1994. Talks began in the days following the Virginia Tech massacre and have focused on strengthening background checks for buyers, especially those with mental illnesses.

After adding salary, bonuses, stock options, and other perks, half of US CEOs make more than $8.3 million a year, with many making far more, according to Associated Press calculations. When compared with other studies, this information shows that CEOs make, on average, 179 times as much as the typical employed American.

Sex offenders have become younger and more violent, according to an Associated Press review of national statistics. Data show a 40 percent rise in violent sex offenses among youths in the last two decades. Some say the numbers do not reflect a rise in offenses, but rather result from stepped-up reporting and stricter laws.

Rags to Riches won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, making her the first filly (female) to win the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crown in 102 years. She is the daughter of A.P. Indy and the granddaughter of Seattle Slew, both racing legends. Her half-brother, Jazil, was last year's Belmont winner.

The Senate voted to pursue inquiries into the treatment of European immigrants in America during World War II. It is thought that approximately 14,000 Italians and Germans, as well as Jews and Latin Americans of German descent, were detained in the US, some for several years after the war's end.

A recent poll shows that while 62 percent of Americans support the death penalty, 39 percent feel that their moral beliefs would disqualify them from serving on a jury in a capital trial.
