New-car preferences: one more way men, women differ

The gender divide, fuzzy enough in other areas of life these days, apparently is much clearer when it comes to vehicle preference, according to the website of Forbes magazine. For the most part, women drivers tend to go for practical and safe cars. Conversely, men who can afford them seem to opt for luxurious, high-performance cars, Forbes says. Its editors drew these conclusions from new-model registration data compiled by the Kelley Blue Book, a measure of which vehicles are more popular with one sex than the other. Based on the percentages of male-versus- female registrants with state departments of motor vehicles, here are the most popular car models for men and women:

Men

1. Chevrolet Suburban C2500 SUV (tie) Mercedes-Benz S55 AMG sedan(tie) Mercedes-Benz S65 sedan (tie) Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG convertible
5. BMW M6 coupe

Women

1. 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse two-door
2. Audi TT two-door
3. Volkswagen New Beetle two-door
4. Mitsubishi Endeavor SUV
5. 2007 Saturn Sky convertible
