Although the color-coded security level has not been raised, more police and federal agents have been assigned to guard US airports after two suspected terrorist incidents in Britain. The beefed-up security was prompted by foiled car bombs found in London and an explosive vehicle crash at Glasgow's airport. The US response is not based on any specific threats, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said Sunday.

President Bush asked for patience in assessing stepped-up operations in Iraq during his weekly radio address Saturday. On Sunday, Bush turned his attention to hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks at Bush's summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

By a nearly 3-to-1 margin, Americans say the main purpose of marriage is the "mutual fulfillment" of adults rather than the "bearing and raising of children," according to a Pew Research Center survey. The results indicate a sharp drop since 1990 in the importance of children to a success of a marriage. A willingness to share household chores, adequate income, and faithfulness were among factors given a higher priority.

A US Forest Service investigation found that the California wildfire that burned 200 homes and 3,100 acres last week near Lake Tahoe was started by an illegal campfire. There was no evidence of criminal intent.

Tennessee on Saturday became the first state to require all customers buying beer at grocery and convenience stores to show IDs, no matter how old the buyer appears. The law, however, does not apply to wine or liquor or to beer sales in bars and restaurants.
